BACKGROUND

The Southern African Network of Nurses and Midwives (SANNAM); the network of Nurses Associations (NNAs) was formed in July 2000 following joint participation of 14 SADC National Nurses Associations in the hosting of the one day nursing satellite Meeting preceding the 13th International HIV/AIDS Conference in Durban. SANNAM was officially launched on 23rd May 2001. The nurses and midwives of the region realized the importance of expanding their role in the fight against HIV/AIDS, considering that they form the majority (70% in most countries) of the health workers in health institutions. It was noted that it is important to pool resources and work as a region in order to strengthen the contribution of nurses and midwives.

Today SANNAM is made up of 15 countries with Madagascar being the last to join.
